As someone working from different locations and home for long years, I have some tips for people will work remotely upcoming weeks.

Don’t forget that, although working from home sounds super cool, office environment gives you social interaction, some healthy rhythms, helps you leave the work behind. Not following some simple tips can cause not enjoying your days, not being productive and feeling working 24 hours.

Here are my tips;

  • It’s not vacation: I’m not your manager, not trying to motivate you. But if you would like to spend your time healthy at home, first realise that, it’s not vacation.
  • Go out first: I highly recommend this rhythm, your body needs to wake up. Just go out and buy a bread, take a tour around your building, plan your day.
  • Be strict on working hours: I’m not someone believes on 8 hours working hours, you decide on your schedule, but if you start at 10:00, start at 10:00, not early, not late. Set alarm, be prepared as you’ve a meeting. And close your laptop at the time you’ve decided. Don’t keep your laptop open, don’t leave it around, don’t check that last email. If not, at the and you’ll work 12 hours without achieving anything and your mind will always be with work.
  • Work Space: Decide on a place; your extra room, kitchen, a table at the living room(not recommended) or somewhere else. And work there, not on the bad, not during the lunch, not in front of netflix for sure.
  • Work or Enjoy, not both: I highly recommend separating your time slots as working or pleasure hours. If you need to focus for 2 hours, don’t talk with your girlfriend, don’t check news, don’t walk to living room or kitchen. And when you finish, take a break, read something you like (offline — I always have magazine subscriptions), when you’re ready, go back to work.
  • Do not work 8 hours: Don’t forget, you don’t work 8 hours when you’re at the office, don’t try to do it when you’re alone. Read something, call a colleague and ask how he’s feeling about the virus etc. Chatting at slack won’t replace it.
  • Video conference: Make all of your calls with video, it’ll force you looking at mirror from time to time.
  • Take off your pijamas: Going outside for a walk will also help pushing that, taking off pyjamas or gym outfits will help you feeling better, feeling you’re working, life still continues.

Good luck everyone upcoming weeks.
